Not so Big News

It didn't take long to kill the idea of building a bungalow for Mom. Franklin County requires that you have 6.0 net acres to support two residences on the same property. Their records show that we have 5.5 net acres, 5.93 acres gross. We had the choice of either buying another half acre or applying for a variance. The former won't fly because there's no seller, and we're pretty much at budget for this project on our own funds, and it would wasteful for Mom to use any of the proceeds from the sale of her home for that. The variance might possibly succeed, but I think it's doubtful. We couldn't even get Franklin County to budge on using a ship's ladder for the loft instead of a staircase. What chance do you thinnk we have to get a waiver for an entire structure? Not worth the time.

Plan B is to build out a nice apartment in the basement. Mom is real excited by this and we've always been excited by it. In the past, Mom refused to consider it because she didn't want to live with us, fearing it'd ruin our marriage, or our relationship with her. Nonsense. I met with the builder today and described what I thought we'd need to make it nice for her. He'll have the preliminary sketch put together by this weekend. I'll then turn that over to Mom and Ellen and to decide what gets built. With advances in sound deadening technology and HVAC these days, I'm pretty sure we can make the basement comfy for Mom.
