We're about to begin the build out of Mom's apartment. The walls are chalked on the floor and we expect to begin to see activity in about a week. The top two photos are end to end views of the space, with the top taken from her interior entry door and the second from her bedroom. The full kitchen will be built out against the dry wall you see at the end in the second photo. In the top photo, an area in far left corner will be built as a media room for all of us. Steel posts not enclosed by a wall will be boxed in with oak, to make them appear to be timbers at first glance. The bottom photo is of her exterior entry. The plan is to make this space her kitchen/dining room with an island roughly aligned with the right edge of the french doors. The living room will be just to the left, outside the view of this shot. Except for the media room and bathroom, every room will have at least one double window for light, although the deck heavily shades all but the late afternoon sun. We can't fix that, but she's not unhappy with the amount of light at this point anyway. Her view will be of the backyard and the woods behind the house. She hopes to see a deer and other critters once she's moved in, and I'll be putting out a salt lick to encourage such visitors for her.
We've only seen one deer so far, but in talking to one of our neighbors who hunts, they are thick as fleas. He put a tree stand up about 50 yards from his house, so it takes him about 10 minutes to go from breakfast to shoot ready. Filling his tag for meat has always been just an investment of a few hours. One of my brother-in-laws who hunts almost immediately asked if he could shoot from our deck!! Talk about the ultimate in tree stand comfort. Hot coffee, food, warmth and conversation just a few steps away! Our neighbor said most of the herds hang around a farm about 1/2 mile away, so I expect Mom will tire of looking at deer soon enough and ask me to remove the salt lick to save the flower beds she plans to install. :)

If your Mom does get tired of seeing deer and you pull the salt lick out, you can consider attracting other animals. I believe bowls of chicken and noodles made by your mother would bring the Ranney boys within viewing distance.
